Which IELTS are you taking?

The reading passages, Writing Task 1, and score benchmarks are completely different. Allen covers both — and helps you identify the right track for your goal.

Academic

University &
Professional Registration

Academic Reading tests abstract analytical comprehension. Writing Task 1 asks you to describe and interpret data — charts, graphs, maps, or diagrams. The standard expected is one of the highest in the English-testing world.

Best for
UK / Australia / Canada University Postgraduate Programs Nurses & Doctors (OET alternative) Law Licensing
General Training

Migration &
Work Pathways

General Reading uses everyday texts — notices, workplace handbooks, advertisements. Writing Task 1 is a formal or informal letter. Scores above 6.0 unlock most PR pathways, while 7.0+ opens premium immigration programs.

Best for
Canada PR (Express Entry) Australia Skilled Migration UK Skilled Worker Visa New Zealand Residency

Three steps to
the band you need

The IELTS is a skill test, not a knowledge test. Your band score reflects how clearly and accurately you can use English — and that only improves with deliberate, structured practice.

🗺

Select Your Track & Set Your Target

Confirm whether you need Academic or General Training, enter your goal band score (6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0), and complete Allen's diagnostic across all four skills. The platform maps which sections have the most room to grow — and which will lift your overall band fastest.

02
🎙

Train the Four Skills Separately

IELTS scores each section independently. A strong Listening score won't rescue a weak Writing. Allen's training isolates each skill — Reading comprehension strategies, Listening accent drills, Band 7 essay frameworks, and Speaking fluency practice with human-paced feedback.

03
🔄

Use the One Skill Retake Strategically

The IELTS One Skill Retake means you don't have to redo the entire test if only one section falls short. Allen flags your "retake risk" section early — the one that's statistically most likely to drag down your overall band — and prioritizes it in your prep calendar.

Built for every
English-speaking destination

From the Listening section's global accents to the Writing Task 1 data visualizations added in 2026 — Allen's question bank reflects the real exam as it is now, not as it was five years ago.

🌍

Global Accent Listening Drills

The 2026 IELTS emphasizes diverse accents — Indian, Nigerian, Australian, and British. Allen's Listening bank includes recordings across all major accent groups so no voice catches you off-guard on test day.

📊

Data Visualization Writing Practice

Academic Task 1 now integrates infographics and charts alongside text. Allen's Writing bank includes 300+ Task 1 prompts featuring pie charts, bar graphs, mixed data sets, and process diagrams — all with Band 7 model answers.

✉️

General Training Letter Frameworks

The three letter types — formal, semi-formal, and informal — each have structural rules that examiners score against. Allen teaches the correct tone, opening formula, and closing for every letter type, with 200+ practice prompts.

🎙

Speaking Interview Simulation

The IELTS Speaking section is a face-to-face interview in three parts. Allen's Speaking practice follows the same structure — timed Part 2 "long turns," follow-up question simulations, and fluency scoring against Band 6, 7, and 8 descriptors.

🔁

One Skill Retake Prep Tracks

Already sat the exam and need to retake only one section? Allen has isolated One Skill Retake prep tracks for Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Reading — intensive, targeted, and built for a quick turn-around re-sit.

📈

Band Score Projections

Every practice session updates your projected band score for each section and your overall projected band. Know whether you're on track for a 7.0 before you book the exam — not after you sit it.

All four skills.
Both versions. Every task type.

IELTS Academic and General Training share a Listening and Speaking section but diverge entirely in Reading and Writing. Allen's bank covers both tracks in full — with separate question sets for each version's Reading and Writing tasks.

Questions are tagged by skill, test version (Academic/General), task type, and target band level (6.0–8.0) so you can filter precisely for what you're working on.

The band that changed everything

Real test-takers. Real immigration outcomes. Real university acceptances.

"I'd taken the IELTS twice and scored 6.5 both times. Writing Task 1 was the problem — I never understood what examiners actually wanted. Allen's band descriptors section showed me exactly how a 7.0 answer is structured differently to a 6.0. Third attempt: 7.5 overall. Express Entry invitation came six weeks later."

IELTS Band Overall

"As a nurse applying for NMC registration in the UK, I needed 7.0 in every section — not just overall. Listening was fine; Speaking was the terror. Allen's Part 2 long-turn practice with the timer was the closest thing to the real examiner pressure. I scored 7.5 Speaking and 7.0 overall. Registered now."

"I got 6.0 in Writing on my first attempt and used the One Skill Retake. Eight weeks of only Writing practice using Allen — Task 1 Academic charts and Task 2 argument essays. The model answers at Band 7 showed me what vocabulary range and cohesion actually look like. Retake Writing score: 7.5. University of Melbourne confirmed."

Common
questions

For migrants, students, and professionals navigating the IELTS for the first or second time.

What is the difference between Academic and General Training IELTS?+
Both versions test the same four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), but the Reading and Writing sections are entirely different. Academic Reading uses complex, abstract passages; General Reading uses practical everyday texts like notices and handbooks. Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to analyze and describe data (charts, graphs); General Writing Task 1 asks you to write a formal, semi-formal, or informal letter. The choice depends on your purpose: Academic for university and professional registration, General for migration and work-based pathways.
What band score do I need for Canadian immigration?+
For Canada's Express Entry Federal Skilled Worker Program, you typically need a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of 7 or higher, which corresponds to approximately Band 6.0 in each section of the IELTS General Training. However, a higher overall band (7.0+) significantly increases your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points, which directly improves your chances of receiving an invitation to apply. For the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the reading and writing requirements are lower but listening and speaking requirements are higher. Allen's band target tool maps directly to CLB equivalencies.
How does the IELTS One Skill Retake work?+
Since 2023, IELTS allows test-takers to retake just one of the four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) rather than the full exam. You must sit the retake within 60 days of your original test date, and you can only use this option once per original sitting. The retake score replaces that section's original score on your new score report. This is particularly valuable for test-takers who score strongly in three sections but fall below their target in one — most commonly Writing. Allen has dedicated One Skill Retake prep tracks that isolate and intensify practice for each individual section.
Is the IELTS accepted at U.S. universities? Or should I take the TOEFL?+
Yes — IELTS is now accepted by over 3,000 institutions in the United States, including most Ivy League and top-ranked universities. The practical difference comes down to test format preference: TOEFL is entirely computer-based; IELTS includes a live Speaking interview with a human examiner. If you're targeting UK, Canadian, or Australian institutions alongside potential U.S. programs, IELTS is often the more versatile choice. If your primary destination is the U.S. only, TOEFL is slightly more standard, though either is accepted at most schools.
How long does it take to improve from Band 6.0 to Band 7.0?+
The Band 6.0 to 7.0 improvement is one of the most common benchmarks Allen users target, and most achieve it in 8–14 weeks of consistent practice (45–60 minutes daily). The timeline depends heavily on which section holds your overall band down. Writing is typically the hardest to improve quickly because it requires structural learning and practice, not just more exposure. Listening and Reading tend to respond faster to targeted drilling. Allen's diagnostic identifies your specific bottleneck in the first week and prioritizes it throughout your prep.
